I *heart* Bombay (and well..Boston)

I'm urban..in the way other people are mountain-people or tunafish junkies. I love city life...something about dreary concrete blocks and grumpy people totally gets my juices flowing. Ergo, this will be a blog about me, my two favourite cities (Bombay and Boston), my addiction to Vietnamese coffee and my views on Gregorian chant and it's efficacy in curing some types of tympannic membrane rupture. Enjoy!

I have a new love!

His name is Stanislav Ivaneski. But he plays Viktor Krum in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. People who know me know what a maniac I am about all things Potter. I blogged about it here some time ago when the new book (well, it's sorta old once you read it about 20 times like I have) came out. While I've always though that the Prisoner of Azkaban was the best book of the lot (and also the best movie so far..Cuaron is a genius), I've always been curious how Mike Newell (Director, HPGOF) would handle what I thought was the most tedious book of the lot. And that's saying a lot, seeing as I think the Chamber of Secrets was a real stinker!

Well, here's my feelings on this movie. As usual, I walked out of the movie with mixed feelings. I hate how the movies constrain my imagination as to what I visualized the characters to be. I hate every one of the main three - Harry, Ron and Hermione. I think the books make them out to be far more interesting and multi-faceted compared to the one-track act that Messers Radcliffe, Grint and Watson enact. I find the supporting cast so much more interesting in the movies..It's got to have something to do with the fact that the producers get the who's who of British cinema to act in the movies. And the aerial shots of Hogwarts get so old after a while..

The three tasks were VASTLY more entertaining in the book as compared to the movie. I found myself waiting for the stupid tasks to finish so that the plot could plod along. And somehow, deleting vast portions of the plot and book made the whole movie so disjointed and weird. I could hear people who hadn't read the book but were watching the movie totally at sea about what the hell was happening with Crouch and Moody. And Voldemort! Finally a vision of what the Dark Lord looked like. And for once I wasn't disappointd. He was almost EXACTLY what I'd imagined he'd be like. Though I always assumed he'd have red slits for eyes..but maybe I was confusing him with Sauron from LOTR. Ralph Fiennes (It's pronounced Rafe just like my first name is spelt Vikster and pronounced Incredible) is really good at this. He gives Voldemort that awesome blend of cruelty and an upper-class British educated accent. I wanna have one of those accents for a while. Perhaps I'll walk about talking like a posh toff all day today.

OK. Major quib time. Cho Chang has a Scottish brogue? Parvati and Padma wearing ghagra cholis to the Yule Ball? So many black kids at Hogwarts? When did they become so inclusive? Movies 1 and 2 would have us believe only white kids got into Hogwarts! Angelina, the Chaser is black? WHERE WERE SNAPE'S LINES??? He's only my favourite character in the books! And I HATE the new Dumbledore. WTF is up with the American accent slipping out occasionlly?

Anyway, here's another picture of Krum. He's hot, Slav and buff. What more do I want? (What is it with me and Slavs? All my boyfriends have been Slav! Sadly Bombay is terribly short of the Slavic variety...methinks a trip to Serbia or Russia is in order!) There's this scene of Krum in a pair of short shorts running along the lake....SIGH! Unbelievable!

Current Music:
Narodno Kolo - Saban Saulic

I'm so into a Serbian music mood today. No matter what M. and Nesha claim, Serbian techo-folk sounds good to me! OK, So I don't understand the uber-nationalistic lyrics that make the two of them so uncomfortable, but the beat is so much fun! Kinda puts a nice tune to Balkan ethnic cleansing..

one - the supporting characters are always more interesting in epic movies, coz the producers tend to play safe with the main characters! supporting characters are also less aspirational and hence more likable to mere mortals!

two - a look at the parallels between lotr and hp could throw up interesting stuff. for e.g, can the presentation of retarded heroes and interesting villians be viewed as a deliberate attempt to subvert the good-wins-over-evil story??!!

Oh dear! I've never agreed more with u than on HP-TGOF. And on Krum being oh so yummy! So just for saying it all, i CAN call u incredible for a day... The film was good in parts, though i think Cuaron did the best job of them all. Although no one agrees with me and i've shouted myself hoarse on this! This film was truly lacking in most places, i missed Snape's lines and even Draco's evil ones and the famous "chemistry" between Harry and Cho was so not there. And that infantile giggling and strange fits of emotion on Ron's part were so not happening! Even the quidditch was quite lacklustre, which is my favorite part in potter films :(
But i remain, a loyal fan. So i shall await the next one too. Sigh...Ralph Fiennes IS sexy though!

... I might even start liking the sound of it in some time.
    Lets have a competition :
The one who praises Vikster most, gets to have him.

I think the second half sucked! The tasks were much more entertaining than the end-game. Quite a build-up which fizzled out. The duel could have been so much more spectacular. An Voldemort although a brilliant try, came off as ... handicapped...? RF is one of my favorite actors, but he really could have done better since he looked to be thoroughly relishing the piece. Agree with you on Snape though- I'm sure this is a chopped version that the Indian distributors have opted for given their stupid time constraints and a full version would appear once the DVDs come out.

Supporting cast is so much more interesting since you don't get to see much of them- a case of familiarity breeding contempt? think of quidditch captain Woods. The moment they pushed him into extra lines, the charm started fading

Anyway, I can never get it why anyone *especially* someone who reads so much would compare a book with a movie. You cannot compare.

was reading this post very tentatively as have neither read the book nor seen the movie as yet. Went to sleep in the 2nd movie. But have heard good things about this one so will venture to see it.
As for the eternal book vs movie debate - the only good movies based on books are which are not a direct dramtisation to name one which I think is very good - Masoom is much better than the novel as well as the original movie Man Woman & Child.

I agree with everything you say! Victor Krum is HOT! I didn't think he would be so scorching in the book; I actually thought he would be ugly. Hermoine only wants to write to him! Hell, I'd hide in his suitcase and be his new school roommate.

I agree the tasks were boring except they did add some piazzaz to the last one. Ralph Fiennes made a great Voldemort. Snape didn't get to do anything--I noticed that, and I love him too. And thank you for hating the new Dumbledore! I thought I was the only one. He's a seedy old man that you find in the subway station. No class. Maggie Smith was great as always.

Even Danial Radcliffe is getting buff, although sexual attraction to Harry seems a bit like kiddie porn. And they brought Myrtle back--her lovely obnoxious self.

    Harry Potter forever!

Well, Michael Gambon is actually (an excellent) British actor, but I agree he doesn't quite have the Dumbledore effect. But I loved this film. There were irritants - the Beauxbatons sequence was just pitifully sexist and there was not enough Snape. But there never is! (And he appears very little in the book too, as far as I remember.)

Hm. What else? Angelina is black, it's mentioned in one of the books. So is Dean. Obviously Cuaron and Newell have more sense than Chris Columbus. I really liked Cho's brogue. She is British, which is why she is, after all, at Hogwarts.

There just wasn't enough Ralph Fiennes in the film. I vote he plays every character in every HP film henceforth! Or Jason Isaacs. Jason Isaacs is teh pretteh. *fantasises about posh Death Eater totty*

Or Gary Oldman, who now ranks just below Ralphiemort as the most terrific actor in these films.

P.S. But omgmmph WHERE WAS BELLATRIX'S PSYCHO TRIAL.

I am so glad the next two books are so full of Blacks, Malfoys and Snape.
